Your Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) is the most important number you'll get in Jamaica. Without it, you cannot open a bank account, get a driver's licence, buy property, register a company, or access most government services. This guide covers every way to apply — whether you're in Jamaica, Canada, the UK, or the US.
What is a TRN?
A TRN — Taxpayer Registration Number — is a unique nine-digit number issued by Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). It replaced multiple tax reference numbers used across government departments and became the single identifier for all financial and government transactions in Jamaica.
Think of it as the Jamaican equivalent of a Social Insurance Number (Canada), National Insurance Number (UK), or Social Security Number (US). You will be asked for it constantly.
When do you need a TRN?
- Opening a bank account at any Jamaican bank
- Applying for a driver's licence
- Purchasing property or land
- Registering a business or company
- Filing income tax returns
- Applying for a passport
- Accessing NHT (National Housing Trust) benefits
- Enrolling children in school
- Receiving government services of any kind
✅ Good news: Getting a TRN is completely free. TAJ does not charge any fee for issuing a TRN. Anyone claiming to charge you for a TRN application is a scammer.
Who Can Apply for a TRN?
Anyone can apply for a TRN — Jamaican citizens, foreign nationals, companies, organisations, and even minors under 18 (with a parent or guardian signing). There is no age minimum. Non-residents and people living abroad can also apply.
Option 1: Apply In Person (Fastest — Same Day)
If you are physically in Jamaica, walking into any TAJ office is the fastest way to get your TRN. In most cases you receive it the same day.
Gather your documents
Bring one valid government-issued photo ID: Jamaican passport, National ID card, or driver's licence.
Download and complete Form 1
Download the Application for Taxpayer Registration (Individuals) — Form 1 — from jamaicatax.gov.jm or pick one up at any TAJ office.
Visit any TAJ office
Bring your completed form and original ID. The main Taxpayer Registration Centre is at 116 East Street, Kingston. There are offices in all parishes.
Receive your TRN
If documents are in order, your TRN is issued the same day. You'll receive a TRN card to take home.
Option 2: Apply Online (3–5 Business Days)
TAJ has an online portal for TRN applications. Note that while you can submit the form online, the physical documents still need to be submitted to a TAJ office to complete the process.
- Visit jamaicatax.gov.jm
- Navigate to eServices → Apply for a TRN
- Complete the online Form 1
- Upload scanned copies of your ID
- Submit and receive an application reference number
- Your TRN will be sent to your registered email address
⚠️ Important: Online applications require you to physically present documents to a TAJ office to finalise. The application is not complete until documents are verified in person or by mail.
Option 3: Apply From Overseas (Mail — 2–4 Weeks)
If you're in Canada, the UK, the US, or anywhere else abroad, you can apply by mail. This is the most common method for diaspora members who want their TRN sorted before arriving in Jamaica.
Documents required for overseas applicants:
- Completed and signed Form 1 (download from jamaicatax.gov.jm)
- A notarized copy of your passport OR driver's licence (notarized by a Notary Public, High Commission, or Consulate)
- The passport copy must show your full name, date of birth, photograph, and signature
- If authorising someone to collect your TRN card in Jamaica — include a letter of authorisation stamped and signed by a Notary Public or Justice of the Peace
- If your ID is not in English — include an official certified translation
Where to mail your application:
| Address | Contact |
|---|---|
| Taxpayer Registration Centre Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) 12 Ocean Boulevard Kingston Mall, Jamaica | Tel: 1-876-924-9280 Email: info@taj.gov.jm |
Once received, your TRN card will be mailed to your overseas address as stated on the application. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks after receipt of documents.
TRN for Minors (Under 18)
Children under 18 can also get a TRN. The application must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Additional documents required include the child's birth certificate showing the parent's name, and the parent's or guardian's own TRN and ID.
TRN for Companies and Organisations
Businesses need their own TRN, separate from the directors' personal TRNs. You'll need to submit Form 2 (Organisation form) along with your Certificate of Incorporation, NIS verification, and the TRN of at least one director.
| Method | Who it's for | Processing time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| In person at TAJ office | Anyone in Jamaica | Same day | Free |
| Online (TAJ portal) | Anyone with internet access | 3–5 business days | Free |
| By mail from overseas | Diaspora and non-residents | 2–4 weeks | Free |

Common TRN Mistakes to Avoid
- Unsigned form: Your Form 1 must be signed. Unsigned forms are rejected immediately.
- Non-notarized overseas ID: A plain photocopy is not accepted. It must be notarized by a Notary Public.
- Signature mismatch: The signature on your form must match your ID. Use the same signature.
- Wrong address: Double check your mailing address if applying from overseas — your TRN card will be mailed there.
- Paying anyone for a TRN: A TRN is completely free. Never pay a third party claiming to "process" it for a fee.
