The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) is Jamaica's social security programme. Almost every worker in Jamaica — employed or self-employed — is required to register and make contributions. Your NIS number is needed for employment, and your contributions build up entitlement to pension and benefit payments later in life.
What is the NIS?
The National Insurance Scheme is administered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. It provides insured individuals with cash benefits in cases of employment injury, maternity, retirement, and death. NIS contributions are deducted from your salary alongside income tax and NHT contributions.
Who Must Register?
- All employed persons aged 18–70 in Jamaica
- Self-employed individuals operating in Jamaica
- Employers must also register and make contributions on behalf of employees
How to Register for NIS
Gather documents
You will need your birth certificate, TRN, and a valid photo ID (National ID, passport, or driver's licence).
Visit your nearest NIS office
NIS has offices in all parishes. The main Kingston office is at 14 National Heroes Circle. You can also apply online at nisvcs.jm.
Complete the registration form
Fill out the NIS registration form at the office. This captures your personal details, address, and employment information.
Receive your NIS number and card
Your NIS number is issued at registration. Your NIS card may take a few weeks to arrive by mail.
NIS Contribution Rates (2025)
| Contributor | Rate | Maximum weekly insurable earnings |
|---|---|---|
| Employee contribution | 3% of earnings | Check NIS website for current ceiling |
| Employer contribution | 3% of employee earnings | Same ceiling applies |
| Self-employed | 6% of declared earnings | Same ceiling applies |
NIS Benefits
- Retirement pension: Monthly pension payment after reaching retirement age (currently 60–65 depending on years of contributions)
- Employment injury benefit: Compensation for work-related injuries and diseases
- Maternity benefit: Weekly cash benefit for eligible female workers
- Funeral grant: Lump sum payment on the death of an insured person or their dependants
✅ For diaspora returnees: If you have NIS contributions on record from previous employment in Jamaica, your contribution history is retained. Check your contributions record at any NIS office or online to see how many qualifying weeks you have accumulated.
Self-Employed NIS Registration
Self-employed individuals register the same way but declare their own earnings and pay both the employee and employer portions (total 6%). Contributions are typically paid quarterly. Keep your receipts — NIS contribution clearance is often required when applying for contracts, tenders, and some government licences.
Let The Attaché Handle Your NIS Registration
The Attaché team manages the entire process on your behalf — document preparation, submission, follow-up, and delivery. No queues, no confusion.
